Mediterranean coastline and blue water

Seven days in Sardinia is enough for one strong region, not the whole island. The most common mistake is landing in one airport, booking beaches on another coast, and losing too much time in the car.

Quick answer

For a first week, choose either north Sardinia with Olbia, Costa Smeralda, La Maddalena-style boat trips, and Alghero, or south Sardinia with Cagliari, nearby beaches, and a slower coastal route. Do not try to cover every coast unless driving is the main purpose of the trip.

North Sardinia route

A north-focused week works well if you fly into Olbia or Alghero. Use Olbia or a nearby coastal base for northeastern beaches, then add Alghero for old-town atmosphere and the northwest coast.

Boat trips, beach parking, and summer traffic can shape the day more than distances on a map.

South Sardinia route

A south-focused week works well from Cagliari. Use the city for food, evenings, and airport convenience, then add beaches and smaller towns as day trips or a second base.

This route is good if you want a mix of city life and beaches without changing hotels constantly.

Do you need a car?

For most seven-day Sardinia routes, a car makes the trip easier. Public transport can work for city-based stays, but beaches and viewpoints often become much simpler with a vehicle.

Check parking before booking accommodation, especially in summer.

What to avoid

Avoid splitting seven days across Cagliari, Alghero, Olbia, Costa Smeralda, and multiple remote beaches. You will see roads more than Sardinia.

Simple decision rule

Pick one airport side, choose two bases at most, and build the week around nearby beaches rather than famous names across the island.
