Clear blue beach water and coastline

Sardinia is not one simple beach destination. It is a large island with different coasts, different airport choices, and very different price levels. Where you stay should depend on whether you want beaches, old towns, boat trips, nightlife, or an easier first base.

Quick answer

Choose Cagliari for city life and southern beaches, Alghero for old-town atmosphere and northwest coast access, Olbia or Costa Smeralda for northern beaches and boat-trip energy, and smaller beach towns if the trip is mostly about relaxing by the sea.

Cagliari

Cagliari is a strong first base if you want a real city, restaurants, history, and access to southern beaches. It works well if you do not want the whole trip to feel like a resort stay.

The downside is that some of Sardinia’s famous northern beaches are far away, so do not stay in Cagliari if your dream trip is only Costa Smeralda.

Alghero

Alghero has an attractive old town, coastal walks, and a more compact feeling. It is good for travelers who want atmosphere plus access to beaches and day trips in the northwest.

It can be a better first base than people expect because evenings are easy and the town has character.

Olbia and Costa Smeralda

Olbia is practical for airport access and northern routes. Costa Smeralda is more polished and expensive, known for beautiful beaches, marinas, and a higher-end summer scene.

If budget matters, check nearby towns rather than assuming Costa Smeralda is the only way to enjoy the north.

Do you need a car?

For many Sardinia trips, a car makes the island easier. Beaches, viewpoints, and smaller towns are not always simple by public transport. If you plan to stay in one town and relax, you may not need a car every day. If you want to explore, plan for one.

Common mistake

The common mistake is booking Sardinia as if every beach and town is close. The island is large, and moving between coasts takes time.

Simple rule

Pick the coast first, then the town. Sardinia works better when your base matches the kind of trip you actually want.
