Where to Stay in Tokyo on a First Trip
A practical area guide comparing Shinjuku, Shibuya, Ueno, Tokyo Station, and Asakusa for first-time visitors.
Tokyo is huge, but the right base keeps it manageable. For a first trip, the best area depends on whether you want transport convenience, nightlife, calmer streets, or easier airport access.
Quick answer
If you want the most practical first base, start with Shinjuku or Tokyo Station. If you want something a bit calmer and more traditional, look at Ueno or Asakusa. Shibuya is great if you want energy and evening activity.
Best first-trip areas
Shinjuku is the strongest all-around option for many first-time visitors. It has excellent transport links, plenty of hotels, and easy access to many parts of the city.
Tokyo Station works well if you want a more organized base, especially if you plan to move around the wider region by train. It is efficient rather than atmospheric, which is exactly what some first trips need.
Shibuya is a good fit if you want a busier, more social area with shopping, restaurants, and nightlife. It is not the quietest choice, but it can feel exciting and simple to use.
Ueno and Asakusa are better when you want a calmer pace and a slightly more traditional atmosphere. They can also feel easier on the budget than the busiest hubs.
What to check before booking
Check the station exit, not just the station name. In Tokyo, the wrong exit can add real walking time. Also check whether your hotel is close to a line you will actually use every day.
If you are arriving from the airport late, the simplest route to your hotel matters more than a slightly fancier area.
Common mistake
Do not choose Tokyo by how famous the neighborhood sounds. Choose it by your daily route. If your plan is museum-heavy, central efficiency can matter more than nightlife. If your plan is food and shopping, Shibuya or Shinjuku may be better.
