A practical guide to reaching central Rome from Fiumicino or Ciampino without making the first day harder.

Ancient Roman ruins in warm evening light

Rome has two main arrival airports, and the right transfer depends on whether you land at Fiumicino or Ciampino. The goal is not to find the cleverest route. It is to reach your first hotel with enough energy left for the city.

Quick answer

From Fiumicino, the Leonardo Express is the simplest train if you are going to Termini. Regional trains can be better if your hotel is near Trastevere, Ostiense, or Tiburtina. From Ciampino, airport buses and taxi options are usually more relevant because there is no direct airport train station in the terminal.

Fiumicino to Rome

Fiumicino has a train station inside the airport complex. The Leonardo Express runs non-stop to Roma Termini, which is useful if your hotel is near Termini or you need a simple first route.

The FL1 regional train does not go to Termini, but it can be better for Trastevere, Ostiense, Tuscolana, and Tiburtina. That matters if your hotel is closer to those stations than to Termini.

Airport buses can be cheaper and direct to Termini, but traffic and departure timing can make them less predictable.

Ciampino to Rome

Ciampino is smaller and often used by low-cost carriers. Reaching central Rome usually involves a bus connection, taxi, or a bus-plus-train combination through nearby stations. For a first visit with luggage, simplicity matters.

If your accommodation is not near Termini, check whether a taxi or pre-arranged transfer saves a stressful chain of changes.

Taxi or transfer

Taxi can be sensible if you arrive late, stay in the historic center, or travel as a small group. The old center has uneven streets and limited-access areas, so confirm where the car can actually stop.

Use official taxi ranks and avoid unofficial drivers.

What to watch for

Termini is useful but not always the best final stop. If your hotel is in Trastevere, near the Vatican, or deep in the historic center, the last leg can change the answer.

Simple decision rule

Use Leonardo Express for the easiest Fiumicino-to-Termini transfer. Use FL1 when it matches your hotel better. From Ciampino, choose the option with the fewest steps after checking the exact hotel address.
