Mexico City is too large to solve in one short trip. A good three-day itinerary gives you the historic center, one museum-and-park day, and one neighborhood or day-trip decision without pretending you can see everything.

Quick answer

Spend day one in Centro Historico and nearby central streets. Use day two for Chapultepec, Reforma, Roma, Condesa, or Polanco. Keep day three for Coyoacan, Xochimilco, or Teotihuacan depending on whether you want neighborhoods, canals, or a major archaeological outing.

Day 1: Centro Historico

Start early in the Zocalo area before the day gets too crowded. Build the day around the cathedral exterior, Templo Mayor area, Palacio de Bellas Artes, Alameda Central, and nearby streets. The official city visitor guide groups Centro Historico among the core must-see areas for a reason: it gives the city historical context quickly.

Keep valuables simple and avoid making the first day too late if you are still adjusting.

Day 2: Chapultepec, Reforma, Roma, and Condesa

Use the second day for a calmer west-central route. Chapultepec and the museum zone can take serious time, especially if the Anthropology Museum is a priority. Later, Roma and Condesa work well for walking, cafes, parks, and dinner.

This is also the day to understand how traffic changes short-looking routes.

Day 3: Coyoacan, Xochimilco, or Teotihuacan

Coyoacan is the easiest cultural-neighborhood choice. Xochimilco is more specific and works best when the canal experience is the point. Teotihuacan is a major outing; the city tourism site notes routes by private taxi or bus from Autobuses del Norte, so treat it as a planned half day or more.

Simple decision rule

Choose one big third-day idea. Mexico City rewards focus more than long cross-city lists.
